The `Iwa, Hawai`iʻs largest bird, is known for being a master thief, able to snatch fish from smaller birds. Upon unifying Hawai`i, King Kamehameha was called Ka`iwaakīloumoku, the `iwa that hooks the islands, as he fearlessly battled chiefs and took the Hawaiian Islands from them. The `Iwa is also known for itʻs ability to fly great distances and is frequently mentioned in Hawaiian mo`olelo (stories) and `ōlelo no`eau (proverbs). The `Iwa is rarely seen. When it is seen in the Hawaiian Islands, a storm is coming.
