Puakenikeni means ten-cent flower. Lei makers during the "Steamer Days" (late 1800s to mid 1900s) strung Puakenikeni and sold them for a dime. The pua (flowers) are best harvested in the early morning. The first day it is white, the second day it is yellow and the third it is orange.
