The `Iwa, Hawai`iʻs largest bird, is known for being a master thief, able to snatch fish from smaller birds. Upon unifying Hawai`i, King Kamehameha was called Ka`iwaakīloumoku, the `iwa that hooks the islands, as he fearlessly battled chiefs and took the Hawaiian Islands from them. The `Iwa is also known for itʻs ability to fly great distances and is frequently mentioned in Hawaiian mo`olelo (stories) and `ōlelo no`eau (proverbs). The `Iwa is rarely seen. When it is seen in the Hawaiian Islands, a storm is coming. Additionally, the Iwa bird symbolizes guidence and pathway as it is associated with the goddess Kaiona, who would send iwa birds to guide lost people out of the Ka'ala and Wai'anae mountains.
