Upon unifying Hawai`I, King Kamehameha was called Ka`iwaakīloumoku, the `iwa that hooks the islands. The `Iwa is known for being a master thief, able to snatch fish from smaller birds like Kamehameha fought fierce battles and took the Hawaiian Islands from other chiefs. The `Iwa is also known for itʻs ability to fly great distances. It is frequently mentioned in Hawaiian mo`olelo (stories) and `ōlelo no`eau (proverbs). The `Iwa is rarely seen. When it is seen in the Hawaiian Islands, a storm is coming.
