Pulelehua was named to honor Kamehameha who unified the Hawaiian islands. This endemic butterfly is our state insect and pollinator of native plants. The caterpillars feed only on native Hawaiian plants like Māmaki, Koa, and Naio. Their chrysalis camouflages and looks like a withered leaf.
